In late 2017 and 2018, scientists have measured increased activity in the volcano under Öræfajökull (the glacier and volcano share the same name). The volcano has been dormant for some 250 years, but is recognised as one of Iceland's most powerful.

Skaftafell Small-Group 2.5-Hour Glacier Hike

Your tour will start at Icelandic Mountain Guides Sales Lodge in Skaftafell - Vatnajökull National Park, located next to the National Park Visitor Center). There you will check in, meet your guide and get geared up with proper equipment for your 2.5-hour glacier walk on Svínafellsjökull Glacier.  After a brief bus ride to the outskirts of the glacier, follow your guide on a short 5-10 minute walk to the glacier. Use the ride and hike to take in the magnificent mountain scenery - if there's a clear sky you can see the highest summit of Iceland, Hvannadalshnukur. Before you step onto the ice, your guide will give you a safety orientation and teach you how to use the glacier gear you were provided with.  The glacier walk will take you to a wonderland of brilliantly blue and white ice, surrounded by high mountains. You will explore deep crevasses, high ice arches, glacier mills and ice sculptures, all the while learning about the dynamic behavior of glaciers and their impact on nature.  After spending 1.5-2 hours on the ice, you will head back to the mini-bus and transport to the base where your tour will be concluded.

Vatnajokull National Park 4-Hour Tour from Skaftafell

Your tour will start at Icelandic Mountain Guides Sales Lodge in Skaftafell - Vatnajökull National Park, located next to the national park visitor center. There you will check in at the sales desk, meet your guide, and get geared up with proper equipment for your 4-hour glacier walk on Svínafellsjökull Glacier. You will be equipped with an ice axe, helmet, harness, and crampons. When you are ready, you can step onto the mini-bus that will take you to the glacier. The drive to Svínafellsjökull Glacier takes about 10 minutes; in the meantime, you can enjoy the mountain scenery, including Hvannadalshnukur, the highest summit of Iceland. At the glacier, your guide will give you a safety orientation and teach you how to use the glacier gear you were provided with. Then, ice axe in hand, step onto the glacier and follow your guide past ice formations such as ice sculptures, tunnels, and seracs. Explore the dramatic landscape as you hike for 3 hours past mazes of ice and deep blue crevasses along the glacier. With insight from your guide, you’ll understand the various geological forces at play, and learn about the history and folklore of the region. Enjoy plenty of photo opportunities of this unparalleled landscape before you re-board the mini-bus for the ride back to town.
