Founded as a cargo depot in Saga times, the pin-sized town of Búðardalur (pronounced boo-thar-dalur) occupies a pleasant position looking out over Hvammsfjörður, at the mouth of the Laxá River. A current claim to fame is its dairy, which produces most of the cheese in Iceland. The local supermarket carries a good sampling.
