Welcome to Wernigerode

The winding streets of its Altstadt (old town) are flanked by prettily coloured half-timbered houses, presided over by a romantic 12th-century ducal castle nestled high above town. Folks also flock here to ride the steam-powered narrow-gauge Harzquerbahn, which has chugged its way around the region for almost a century; the line to the summit of the Brocken (1142m), northern Germany's highest peak, originates here.

Most of the Central Harz was, for a time, part of the GDR and Wernigerode was the major hub in this neck of the woods, although you'll be hard-pressed to find many relics of that period in history, architecturally or otherwise, unless you look very carefully.
