The architecture of the nation’s flagship theatre is considered an icon of the brutalist school. The complex comprises three auditoriums for performances. Fantastic backstage tours lasting up to 1½ hours (adult/child £11/9) are available daily. Every tour is different, but you can expect to go into at least one auditorium and may be able to see rehearsals, changes of sets, visit the prop room or bump into actors. Book ahead via the website.
Architecture tours (£12.50) run several times a week; there are family tours (£9.50) in school holidays and costume tours (£12.50) run monthly. The large lobbies are open to the public, with several bars, cafes and plenty of seating.
