    Liselund Ny Slot

For sheer romance, the idea of slumbering in a 19th-century chateau is hard to beat, and waking up to glimpses of Liselund's majestic park is a delight. But beyond the elegant restaurant, don't expect too much indulgence. The 17 rooms are pleasant but relatively simple, with wooden floorboards, inserted toilet-shower booths and neither kettle nor fridge. Beds are very comfortable. Room sizes vary from small, rather dark 212 and 213 to airy 219 with a desk in the window. The two half-timbered interconnecting suites (227, 228) are superbly bright and spacious but with smaller windows. Complete with birdlife murals, unique room 226 is small but tucked into the spired tower. Below that is a 'secret' library/sitting room for all guests, and there's also a pair of communal balconies, some enchanting lawn seating and a panel-walled lounge area attached to the restaurant. October to March, bargain half-board deals start at 1299kr.

In an artistically lonely setting, Tohøjgaard gazes out towards a wind-whipped sea across an arc of field flanked by a grassy prehistoric burial mound. The five individually themed guest rooms share three stair-accessed bathrooms. Relax in communal sitting spaces including a conservatory and kitchen-lounge decked out with yoga and Bhakti-Marga meditation paraphernalia (occasional yoga/meditation retreats are held here). Free tea and coffee are provided. Breakfast (75kr) and vegetarian dinners (120kr) are available by arrangement at a long family dining table. The guesthouse is a 4km walk from the nearest bus stop in Damsholte (bus 664), or a 9.5km drive southwest of Stege in an area dotted with pretty thatched cottages.

    Motel Stege

Motel Stege offers 12 simple yet smart rooms, tucked away on a quiet lane directly behind the church. Leading off the homely communal kitchen-dining area, the six rooms in the main building sleep up to four people, with extra beds on a mezzanine level accessible by a disconcertingly steep ladder. Rooms in the annexe have their own kitchenette. There's no reception: contact the obliging owners to pre-arrange key collection through a safety deposit box facing the little lawn in the rear yard.

    Pension Elmehøj

Facing Elmelunde Kirke, this three-storey ivy-draped pension looks like a French country inn but is organised more like a friendly 'hostel with a heart'. Breakfast costs 65kr. Big poppy motifs and strings of dried flowers add character to the potentially institutional interior, which is ageing but very well maintained. There's plenty of communal space including a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, games room and ample garden seating. Power points are limited in the 24 very variably sized bedrooms. Bring your own sheets or rent them for 55kr. Laundry costs 35kr per machine.
