Welcome to Chuí
Located 245km south of Rio Grande, this border town is both Brazilian and Uruguayan (Chuí and Chuy, respectively). The main drag acts as the border: on the northern (Brazilian) side it is Av Uruguaí, while on the southern (Uruguayan) side it is Av Brasil. Tourists can wander freely on both sides of the town; Portuguese and Spanish are spoken interchangeably.
The Uruguayan side is home to many duty-free shops and casinos, so Chuy attracts its fair share of smugglers and gamblers. Unless these are your games, you may not wish to stick around longer than necessary.
