Galibi & Coppename Nature Reserves
Galibi's turtle-nesting area hosts hordes of sea turtles, including the giant leatherback, during egg-laying season (April through August). You can get there from Albina with permission from members of the local Carib community and a hired canoe, or more easily from Paramaribo with the tour operator Stinasu.
Brownsberg Nature Reserve & Brokopondo
Brownsberg's park headquarters are located on a high plateau overlooking Brokopondo, about 100km from Paramaribo along a red-dirt highway. Monkeys seem to be everywhere, whether they're red howlers growling in the canopy, or precious black-bearded sakis checking you out from a tree limb.
Central Suriname Nature Reserve
One of the biggest swaths of Suriname's protected regions, covering 12% of Suriname's land area, this nature reserve covers 16,000 sq km and was established in 1998 with a US$1 million donation from Conservation International. Around 40% of Central Suriname Nature Reserve's plants and animals are found only in the Guianas.
