Mumbai has long been a centre for the arts, and its Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is one of India’s finest museums. The city’s folk and decorative traditions are on display at the recently restored Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum, and both museums are in stunning buildings that qualify as exhibitions in and of themselves. India’s contemporary art scene, meanwhile, has exploded in recent years, and Mumbai, along with Delhi, is at the centre of the action. A slew of galleries, mostly in Colaba, are showing incredible work in some gorgeous spaces. Kala Ghoda, meanwhile, Mumbai’s traditional art district, has a namesake two-week festival (www.kalaghodaassociation.com) each February, with some great exhibitions. Year-round, the second Thursday of each month is ‘Art Night Thursday’, when galleries stay open late and the vibe is social.
