Not too many people make it all the way up here, but New Hampshire offers three scenic routes north of the Notches and Bretton Woods. Nothing beats US 2 from the Vermont–New Hampshire state line to the Maine–New Hampshire line: the expansive but looming mountain views are unparalleled. Alternatively, if you’re heading to the outposts of Maine, take NH 16 north from Gorham to Errol. This route runs parallel to the birch-lined Androscoggin River.
If you really want to get remote, follow US 3 through the Connecticut Lakes region up to New Hampshire’s extreme northern tip, just below the Quebec border. This is the heart of New Hampshire's moose country. Take it slow and heed the ubiquitous signs warning of 'hundreds of collisions' – they're not joking! For a better chance of spotting a moose 'in the flesh,' consider the moose tours sponsored by the town of Gorham.
