This settlement of historic homes and manicured streets is a superb base for those wishing to explore the Monadnock region while staying in a classic New England town with a strong community feel. Although there aren't many noteworthy sights, you could easily spend an afternoon exploring the shops and restaurants along the photogenic Main St.
But be aware that the Norman Rockwell face of downtown has become a bit of a facade in recent years, hiding a community deeply affected by the opioid and heroin epidemic striking small towns across the US. Nearby I-93 has been dubbed the Heroin Highway. Evidence of the problem can be found in the increased number of transients and panhandlers on Main St. Their presence isn't overwhelming, and the bustling downtown feels very safe, but it's an unfortunate change.
