Lovely Vicksburg sits atop a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. During the Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant besieged the city for 47 days until its surrender on July 4, 1863, at which point the North gained dominance over North America's greatest river. Despite being most famous for a siege and a battle, many of the historic homes of Vicksburg have survived the centuries, and today the town's historic core is considered one of the most attractive in the state.
