Lovely Vicksburg sits atop a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. During the Civil War, Gen Ulysses S Grant besieged the city for 47 days until its surrender on July 4, 1863, at which point the North gained dominance over North America's greatest river. Although Vicksburg is most famous for a siege and a battle, many of its historic homes have survived the centuries, and today the town's historic core is considered one of the most attractive in the state.
