Welcome to Utö
Mostly flat and lush with fairy-tale forests, it's particularly suited to low-impact cycling and walking – there's a delightful 3.5km nature trail with information on the local fauna and flora along the way. The island is also popular for sailing, fishing or simply flopping on a tranquil sandy beach. Like much of the archipelago, Utö is on the migratory path for a variety of seabirds, as well the snow goose and the more unusual Arctic puffin, so it is a popular destination for birdwatchers.
For the best views, head to the Dutch-style windmill on Kvarnbacken hill, 10 minutes' walk from the harbour.
