Welcome to Greymouth Region

The largest town, Greymouth (to the Māori 'Māwhera', wide river mouth), is big on services but light on attractions, though the classy brewery and historic village Shantytown merit a visit. Inland, Kumara is a common stop-off for cyclists on the West Coast Wilderness Trail, Lake Brunner is a soothing getaway for fishing or bird-watching, and remote Blackball is firmly in trampers' eyelines as a starting point for the Pike29 Memorial Track, a 45km 'Great Walk' destined to open in 2019. Even by NZ's standards, the Greymouth region is a standout for friendliness; its down-to-earth folks might be reason enough to dawdle here before you travel on.
