Colorful Huamantla has invested greatly in its downtown area, gussying up its colonial city center and adding pizazz to its charming zócalo with giant letters (an international trend) spelling 'Huamantla.' The most alluring recent addition is the monthly Sábados Mágicos (Magic Saturdays), where a small street is carpeted in colored sawdust and bright blooms. It's a taster of the flower parades held during Huamantla's larger annual feria in August.
With La Malinche looming over town, this is a pleasant base camp for exploring the surrounding countryside, once you get past its sprawling suburbs. Most escapees from Puebla will just stay in town and enjoy the eye-popping paint job atop Huamantla's church, Parroquia de San Luis Obispo.
