Welcome to Sodom

By day, the rusty (from the salt air) smokestacks, pipes and holding tanks of the Dead Sea Works (DSW) complex, a few kilometres south of Mt Sodom, look like a mid-20th-century industrial dystopia, but by night, when the sprawling facilities are lit by thousands of yellowish lights, the site has a mysterious, other-worldly beauty. Products made by the DSW from the waters of the Dead Sea – Israel’s only major natural resource other than sunlight and the gas fields off the Mediterranean coast – range from magnesium chloride, anhydrous aluminium chloride and potash (for fertilisers) to table salt and inputs for cosmetics.
