    Motevibashi Hotel

The classic, 180-year-old house of Aramgah's one-time motevibashi (caretaker) has been tastefully converted into an eight-room boutique hotel using traditional fabrics and earthenware decoration, with full mod cons and breakfast served on the grand porch facing the shrine. Most rooms are triples; the one double is a little small but adorably appointed. If accompanied by management, guests can walk along the exclusive pedestrian viaducts that once gave the motevibashi direct access to the Aramgah complex.

    Shabhayeh Rayen

A short walk from the fortress complex, this 'apartment hotel' has five luxurious new suites with two bedrooms, new bathrooms, kitchen/sitting room and many helpful extras, including kettle, crockery, hair dryer and toilet paper (but not towels). If the ground-floor reception room is closed, ask at the nearby shops (or call) to find Ruhollah, who speaks a few words of English.

    Mahan Tourist Inn

Designed throughout with pointed arch effects for a sense of local style, this hotel offers reliable midrange quality at very affordable prices. It's on a roundabout 800m north of the Aramgah, up Imam Khomeini St.

    Mehmansarai Bagh-e Shah Zadeh

Want to sleep in a Unesco site? There are 15 relatively simple guest rooms in arched spaces to the right of the gatehouse as you enter the Shahzde Gardens. You get a bed and a heater in winter, but there's no summer air-con and it can be a fair walk to reach the shared outdoor toilets. Collect keys from the restaurant at the other end of the park.

    Hotel Tala Arg

Oddly located in a row of car mechanics' workshops, 300m north of Azadi Sq, this cheap, basic place comprises an unremarkable restaurant, tea garden and nine compact rooms with bathroom and squat toilet. Only operates weekends during off-season.
