Welcome to Vopnafjörður
Legend has it ‘Weapon Fjord’ was once the notorious home of a fearsome dragon that protected Northeast Iceland from harm. Today, there are no dragons, and the town is an agreeably sleepy place; it's well known for the superlative salmon rivers in the area (Prince Charles and George Bush Sr have fished here; James Ratcliffe is buying property on them).
Note that, officially, Vopnafjörður is considered to be part of East Iceland and online information is found at www.east.is. We have covered it under North Iceland for the logistics of travelling the Northeast Circuit along Rte 85.
