The industrial city of Le Mans has achieved global fame for hosting one of the world's premier endurance car races, but visitors will also find a picturesque old city – surrounded by Gallo-Roman walls – and reminders of the 1908 visit of American aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright. Brass imprints of the hands (and, in some cases, feet) of winning pilotes (race-car drivers) are embedded, Hollywood style, in city-centre sidewalks. King Henry II of England was born here in 1133.
