Welcome to Yusufeli
This likeable valley town at the confluence of the Barhal and İspir Rivers (whose joint waters become the Çoruh River here) is sadly slated to vanish underwater. The Yusufeli dam, being built about 12km down the Çoruh, may be completed by 2019 and the resulting reservoir will submerge the town – and put an end to most of the white-water rafting for which it's famed. Construction of Yeni (New) Yusufeli on the hillside on the west side of the Barhal River has already started. For now, Yusufeli remains the gateway to the southern Kaçkars, a good base for the Georgian valleys, and a white-water rafting centre.
The town straddles the Barhal River, with three road bridges and three footbridges crossing this within 1km.
