Featuring a commanding terrace with water and fortress views, laid-back Bistro Magasinet is as good for a vino as it is for a feed. In summer, a pop-up outlet opens beside the terrace, selling everything from Scandi women's fashion to jewellery.

  • Top ChoiceRestaurants in Finnhamn

    Finnhamns Café & Krog

The kitchen and service at Finnhamns Krog, steps away from the ferry dock, are top notch: classy yet comfortable, and capable of transforming seafood into gold. Try the pickled-herring platter ('SOS'), or the daily lunch special (choose among meat, fish or vegetarian – you can't go wrong with fish). Sustainable ingredients are a priority. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

  • Restaurants in Vaxholm

    La Maison

After running a Parisian bakery, Kerstin Lekander decided to bring a little Gallic flair to Vaxholm. Decorated with rustic floorboards and a communal timber table, her island bakery lures the peckish with its freshly baked artisan loaves, baguette sandwiches, quiches, canapés and Alsatian-style pizza. The pastries are unashamedly buttery, with bite-sized versions for those who sin in moderation. Proper espresso to boot.

  • Restaurants in Utö

    Utö Bakgård

In a red-timber cottage just up from the harbour, this adorable bakery serves a smashing cardamom bulle (bun) that is one of the best in Sweden. Sweet, sticky bliss aside, it also serves filling sandwiches (perfect if you're on the go), fruit smoothies and hot meals. If the weather is on your side, sit at the bucolic outdoor tables.

  • Restaurants in Utö

    Nya Dannekrogen

Near the Gruvbryggan harbour, this lively restaurant-bar has a young, casual vibe, with meals ranging from hearty fish stew to quinoa salad. The fried Baltic herring (195kr) with lingonberries and mashed potatoes is recommended, while the decent burgers are made using brioche buns from the celebrated bakery across the street. The pizza is popular, though serious pizza aficionados may not be overly impressed.

  • Restaurants in Vaxholm

Splashed with colourful artworks, harbourside Boulangerie keeps the calories coming with its gorgeous, just-baked cakes and Swedish pastries. A short, simple choice of savouries includes fresh sandwiches, omelettes, croque monsieur and Scandi classic toast skagen (toast with roe, crème fraiche and finely chopped red onions). The coffee is decent and the house wine is poured at around 85kr a glass.

  • Restaurants in Utö

There are great views of the harbour from the sprawling terrace here, where bites range from open-face shrimp sandwiches to nutritious poke bowls. It's also a perfect spot to kick back with a drink, whether it be a cold-brew coffee, craft beer or homemade lemonade. Hyperactive kids can burn energy at the adjacent children's playground, complete with miniature golf.

  • Restaurants in Utö

    Matssons Kök

Set on a bucolic country road, Matssons is one of the less touristy restaurants on the island. This is probably due to its location, a gentle 3.5km stroll west from the harbour in tiny Edesnäs. The menu holds no surprises but the homemade fries and burgers (which include a halloumi version) are excellent. Gluten-free dishes are available, plus craft beers.

  • Restaurants in Arholma

    Arholma Dansbana

The only dining option near the harbour, this hilltop restaurant offers amazing views from its glassed-in dining room as well as from a few outdoor tables. Seating is arranged around a dance floor (hence the name), which can get lively on summer weekend nights. The menu is brief but well executed; try the seafood stew or the röding (Arctic char).

  • Restaurants in Vaxholm

    Melanders Fisk

Waterfront fishmonger Melanders Fisk comes with its own eatery, serving Nordic surf classics like toast skagen and delicate fish stew. Those with cash to splash can opt for a seafood platter (from 550kr per person), which comes with half a lobster. Whatever you choose, wash it down with a local brew from Waxholms Bryggeri.

  • Restaurants in Vaxholm

    Waxholms Hotell

In an art nouveau building opposite the harbour, grand Waxholms offers classic fine dining and bewitching water views in its upstairs dining room. In summer, stop for lunch on the popular outdoor terrace at Lilla Strand, the hotel's more casual bistro-style eatery.

  • Restaurants in Sandhamn

Inside Seglarhotellet, this superb restaurant serves high-end Swedish food, from exceptional seared Lofoten cod to coffee-roasted venison. The lunch seafood buffet (195kr) is a big draw, and in August people flock here for crayfish parties.
