Hiking on the Edge of Ljubljana

When you look from the Ljubljana castle tower to the north, you will see a double hill called Šmarna Gora and Grmada, which resembles a volcano and is one of the favorite meeting points of Ljubljana residents. On the hilltop of Šmarna Gora, you will find a magnificent baroque church and an excellent restaurant. With a belly full of Slovenian delicacies, you can take a walk around the church walls and enjoy the view of one-third of Slovenia, from Styria over the Julian and Kamnik Alps to Notranjska and Dolenjska. Beneath Šmarna Gora, you will of course see Ljubljana in all it's magnificent beauty. When looking towards Šmarna Gora, on the right you will see another hill, Rašica. A pleasant walk through the woods in summer, full of mushrooms and blueberries, we will take you to the top of the hill to a lookout tower. The tower offers spectacular views of the Šmarna Gora and the entire Ljubljana basin. Under the tower in the woods, there is a cozy mountain lodge, where you will be pampered by a young team with homemade dishes and craft beer.

They will prepare a range of local traditional dishes as our grandmothers did and the lunch will be accompanied by a glass of Cvicek wine. Cvicek is a relatively light wine with alcohol level below 10% . Its characteristic acidity makes it perfect for almost any occasion. It goes great with traditional hearty Slovenian food. It will be a feast for your taste buds!   Then there is Cvicek – a curiosity on its own. A special wine made only in this region and nowhere else in the world! The secret of this truly unique wine is in blending various reds with white varieties and besides Chianti it is the only wine made from a blend of red and white wine grapes. It has an attractive, light red color with a slight ruby cast, and fresh fruity aromas. It is produced by a complex process where a mixture of different varieties of grapes are added together to create the final product.   Afternoon  highlight of the day awaits you. At an old country homestead you will be greeted in traditional Dolenjska way – with an invitation to the old wine cellar for the wine tasting. You will get to taste 3 main ingredients of Cvicek and a glass of Cvicek wine grown by one of the Cvicek Consortium members. You will also enjoy a snack of buckwheat bread with walnuts and home-made cheese. On top of everything you will see a multimedia presentation 'Story of Cvicek'. Returning back to Ljubljana we’ll make a short stop at Otočec – a romantic castle on an island in the middle of the river Krka. Here you can enjoy a casual stroll along the river banks or simply take time for a nice cup of tea or coffee. Return back to Ljubljana to original departure point.

Ljubljana wine experience

We start the wine experience at STIC in Ljubljana market where we take the funicular to climb up to the Ljubljana Castle. We take a look at the Ljubljana city or castle vineyard where some 1050 vines of the Rdečegrajc (Zweigelt) and belpin (Chardonnay) varieties grow on the southern slope of the hill, and learn how the castle wine story ties in with the offspring of the Old Vine of Lent (at over 400 years of age, this is considered the oldest vine in the world) growing in the castle yard. Participants will learn about viticulture, discover many secrets, and taste the wines from Štajerska. After the visit to the vineyard, we descend to the old city centre on foot where we walk past one of the smallest wineries in Ljubljana. This is followed with a tasting of wines and other treats from Dolenjska. We end the Wine Tour of Ljubljana in the winery next to the City Hall, where we are introduced to wines from Primorska. These selected wines from three wine-growing regions with 14 wine-growing districts are ranked among the best in the world with regard to quality. No less than 52 vine varieties grow here. Wine tastings include snacks.
