Nudging against the mountainous Poland–Slovakia border, Ždiar is a sleepy but exceptionally scenic base for hiking and biking. The village bewitches visitors with its decorated timber cottages and sublime views. Inhabited since the 16th century, Ždiar is among the oldest settlements in the Tatras. Its traditions and hospitality have barely changed: the culture of the Goral people, Central European highlanders, is plain to see in the gingerbread housing style, handicrafts and meals heavy with cheese.
