Lao San Yang

Jiangxi

Promising to 'keep the real taste of Old Nanchang', this wildly popular no-frills restaurant has a youthful vibe, a Communist Revolutionary theme and a menu full of spicy Jiangxi deliciousness. The house speciality, a large tin tray of xiǎo lóngxiā (小龙虾, spicy crayfish; ¥108), needs to be shared by at least two people, but the rest of the menu has normal-sized dishes.

Like the crayfish, the xiè jiǎo lāo miàn (蟹脚捞面, spicy crab-claw noodles, ¥45) is a dish well worth getting your fingers messy for. The same goes for the suàn xiāng jī chì (蒜香鸡翅, garlic chicken wings, ¥32), while veg dishes like qīng chǎo shí shū (清炒时蔬, fresh-fried Chinese broccoli, ¥16) should keep things healthy. If the spices get too much, order a palette-cleansing bowl of cold, slightly sweetened lǜ dòu tāng (绿豆汤, green-bean porridge, ¥3), or just wolf down a pí jiǔ (啤酒, beer, ¥10). The menu is in Chinese, but has photos.
