Welcome to Sorsogon
The eponymous capital of Bicol’s southernmost province lies in a beautiful area of off-track beaches, natural springs and rice fields that sprawl beneath jungle-clad volcanoes. Sorsogon city itself is not particularly beautiful or appealing, but it's a good base for trekking on the province’s highest volcano, Mt Bulusan, and it provides transport links to the rest of the province. The liveliest time to be in Sorsogon is during the mid-October Kasanggayahan festival, which celebrates the history of the city through beauty pageants, parades, music and bangka races.
Of the numerous beaches within striking distance of Sorsogon city, the most popular is Rizal Beach, 24km southeast, with some decent surf and a resort. Jeepneys (P25, 30 minutes) go there.
