For a holiday location with a difference, an Airbnb is being offered that is located on top of a lava flow at the base of the world’s most active volcano. Phoenix House is located in Kalapana, four miles away from Mauna Loa on Hawai’i’the Big Island. It has erupted 33 times since 1843, but the last time was back in 1984, which might give you confidence to stay at the one-bedroom retreat.
Surrounded by lava, the 450-square-foot home was designed by Will Beilharz of ArtisTree. It is described by its owners as a “unique retreat space for people to come visit in times of reverence, contemplation, and healing.” “If you are ever in need of a space to go to be reborn, come and rise from the ashes in Phoenix House,” they say.
From your window, you can see the plume of smoke where the lava meets the ocean, and marvel at miles of dramatic black lava fields. Your holiday snaps will certainly be different as you can visit black sand beaches and geothermal warm ponds, waterfalls and live-flowing lava.
Phoenix House is named after the mythical bird whose story is about rising from the ashes and the cycle of death and rebirth. “We built this house with deep respect for Mother Earth,” says designer Will. “For that reason, you will find the design minimalist, the development footprint light, and the result is at one with its surroundings.”
Host Jade lives next door and offers optional private services like customised Kundalini yoga, sound healing with gong baths and tuning forks, quantum bio-energetic therapy sessions and emotional freedom sessions.
Phoenix House costs $125 per night to rent through Airbnb. Check out the listing here.
