Pokemon Go, an augmented reality mobile game and current obsession of people around the world, has sent thousands of users wandering their cities in search of the little creatures in an attempt to “catch em all”. While some mishaps, controversy and incidents of crime have made headlines, the app has also gotten lots of people to head to places they may not otherwise.
There’s no doubt that the app is getting a lot of people out and exploring the world around them, and many institutions are taking note. From the Sydney Opera House to the entire city of Portland, museums, cultural institutions and more are encouraging people to swing by and catch some Pokemon – hopefully stopping to enjoy what else they have to offer.
With so many people experiencing new places through Pokemon Go, here are just a few amazing spots Poke-loving travellers are encouraged to visit.

Naturally, there are also a number of places where playing the game has been discouraged. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum tweeted that while they welcome people to come by and use technology to engage with the exhibits, they ask that people be respectful. The Arlington National Cemetery in the US, where many veterans are buried, tweeted that they do not considering playing the game “appropriate decorum on the grounds of ANC. We ask all visitors to refrain from such activity”. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum also noted that they didn’t want people playing Pokemon Go at the site.
But, when playing respectfully, many people are having fun and covering some serious ground at the same time.
And naturally, the most important thing when playing the game is to stay safe – as police around the world are warning.
