Only in Australia would it be possible for the ex-prime minister to end up in the papers for stealing a teenager’s wave.
A photo on Instagram taken by photographer Bailey Eldering, showed an unimpressed 17-year-old student Ivy Thomas, looking on as the ex-Australian prime-minister Tony Abbott takes a wave at Noosa, Queensland, on Easter Monday.
Speaking to the Guardian she said “I paddled out and he was just sitting there on his board, waiting for a wave. It was so bizarre.”
The photo shows how Abbott took a wave that by surfing etiquette should’ve gone to Thomas, as she looks miffed by the slight.
“Because I was on the inside of him and it’s a right-hand break, I technically had right of way. That was supposed to be my wave – but I don’t really mind,” she said.
“I saw that he was going for it as well, but I wasn’t going to call him off, like, ‘That’s my wave!’ You can’t do that to an ex-prime minister.”
Thomas is a popular young surfer with over 10 thousand followers on her Instagram, where she shared the photo. Abbott is also a keen surfer and for years has often been seen surfing on the beaches of Northern Sydney.
