Welcome to Nozawa Onsen
Settled as early as the 8th century, Nozawa Onsen (野沢温泉) is compact and quaint, with a maze of narrow streets. Dotted around the village are public onsen and a range of excellent accommodation. Outside the busy ski season, it's possible to briefly escape modernity and get a sense of life in an ancient mountain village. There's a strong sense of community here, epitomised by the 13 soto-yu onsen, each maintained by a different part of the village as bathing spots for locals. Onsen water is still used by many for laundry, cooking and heating. There's a refreshing desire to avoid unbridled development and maintain the uniqueness of the village.
