Welcome to South of Srinagar
If those haven't slaked your thirst for ancient ruins, consider an 8km diversion from Khanabal to Mattan (Martand), 2.5km above which are the remnants of a more impressive, 8th-century sun temple set in splendidly tended grounds (follow signs to Kehrbal). Nearby are the small but attractive Achabal Mughal Gardens. A few kilometres closer to Pahalgam is the important Sufi pilgrimage site of Aishmuqam.
Reached via a separate road south of Srinagar Airport is Char-i-Sharif, the shrine town of Kashmir’s ‘patron saint’ Sheikh Nuraddin-Wali, and beyond is the pine-framed meadow of Yusmarg, where some Muslim scholars claim Jesus came to 'retire' after surviving the crucifixion.
