    Gut Drauf at Gut Oggau

It's worth planning ahead to visit this wonderful cellar door, a few kilometres north of Rust, in the hamlet of Oggau. Young winemakers Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck create highly individual, biodynamic and minimal-intervention wines for their gorgeous, new-school Heuriger. Apart from their own wines, they also offer a selection of reasonably priced vintages from like-minded Austrian and Italian producers. Snacking plates (€6 to €10) are equally as intriguing – such as a plate of local sheep cheese with nasturtium pesto or perfect dark bread with lardo. Menus change regularly.

    Selektion Vinothek Burgenland

Occupying one of the erstwhile, columned gatehouses of Schloss Esterházy, with a summer terrace that has a fabulous outlook across to its buttercup yellow loveliness, this wine emporium is a very pleasurable way to get to know Burgenland's wines. You can do a themed tasting flight or just buy a bottle. Nibbles come in the form of toasted sandwiches, meat and cheese platters and Sunday BBQs. Apart from the wine, there is a lovey range of local produce here too.

    Piano

An assorted crowd of students, local office workers and mellow jazz types pack in tightly at this lively and off-beat pub. It does a couple of local sausage snacks and sandwiches to go with its expertly assembled selection of beers. One of the last places to close in otherwise quiet Krems.

    Cinema Paradiso

Super-central trendoid spot for mulling over a paper or something heart-pumping. True to its name, it's also an art-house cinema.

    Stadtcafe Ulrich

Krems’ busiest cafe is this elegantly high-ceilinged, open-all-hours Viennese job next to the Steinertor (the medieval gateway into the old town). The coffee and strudel here makes a great breakfast and there's a small terrace out front.

  • Nightlife in Krems an der Donau

    Weinstein

A Danube-facing, columned wine bar that stocks a comprehensive lineup of local wines by the glass. The kitchen turns out good drinking food, say carpaccio in summer or a house burger in winter.
