More and more people are working remotely these days, with the rise of the idea of the “digital native” granting more freedom of movement to people all over the world. A recent study has revealed that when it comes to the United States, one city offers the best quality of life for remote workers – as well as which destinations are still coming up short.

According to the new data released by website Overhead on Conference Calls, which cites the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 16% of the United States workforce (around 26 million people) work remotely at least part of the time. Working off that notion, they put together a study that looked at how different cities compared, analysing the 50 largest in the country under five different factors such as Wi-Fi speed, co-working spaces and coffee shops per capita, commute-time savings and cost of living.

Kansas City in Missouri came out on top as the best city for remote work, scoring well for both cost of living and average Wi-Fi speed. In fact, according to the website’s analysis, it has the fastest Wi-Fi speeds in the entire country, a factor that was weighted double in the study. Coming in at number two was Salt Lake City, Utah, which has a low cost of living compared to other cities. Also in the top ten was Austin, Raleigh, San Antonio, Denver, Atlanta, Richmond, Dallas and Las Vegas.

Coming in 50th in the study was Memphis, Tennessee, which was shown to have some of the slowest average Wi-Fi speeds as well as low counts of co-working spaces and coffee shops per capita. Also in the bottom five was New York City, Cleveland, Detroit and Birmingham.
