An Air India plane bound for Leh in Ladakh had a near miss with an unmanned drone on its final approach into the mountain-fringed runway at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, regarded as India’s most difficult airport for pilots. Compounding the plane’s problems, ground-to-air communication systems also failed, leaving pilots dependent on a system of flares - green for ‘land’ and red for ‘go round’ - for permission to land. Drones are becoming an increasing hazard to aviation across the globe - a British Airways plane had a near miss with a drone on approach to Heathrow Airport earlier this year.
