There's nowhere quite like it in all Vietnam. This delightful pocket-sized island capital – with its litter-free streets, well-kept municipal buildings and air of calm and prosperity – would make a perfect location for a period film.
The main seafront promenade of Ð Ton Duc Thanh is a delight to stroll, lined with French-era villas, some crumbling, others renovated as hotels. Nearby is the local Market, busiest between 7am and 9am.
Of course, the town's genteel appearance and character is tempered considerably by the presence of several prisons, cemeteries and reminders of the island's historic role as a penal colony. There are ghosts everywhere in Con Son.
