In the barred pavilion on the plaza between the two churches, Iglesia de San Francisco and Iglesia de San Clemente, is the Cruz de San Clemente. This is said to be the cross used in the first mass celebrated after the town’s foundation. It’s made from the wood of the cují tree, a slow-growing species of acacia that is found in this arid region.
