Sultry Chinandega is the regional transport hub with a few decent hotels, a clutch of good restaurants, an excellent archaeological museum and several appealing churches. It's not a bad place to bed down for a night or two (splurge on the air-con, since it's hot as the Sahara); you're likely to acquaint yourself with this busy agricultural town if you happen to be heading toward Nicaragua's northwestern beaches or looking to explore the little-visited Volcán Cosigüina.
