Welcome to Ikh Nartiin Chuluu
As you hike through its canyons and scramble up navigable rock towers in the Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve you'll notice the red earth is so mineral rich, crystals gleam at your feet, which only magnifies the valley's beauty until it glows in your mind like a place of pure, almost spiritual, magic. Join the club. Here are prayer flags looped around ovoo and rock outcrops, there are prayer beads left as offerings beneath swallows nests. Probably because it was once set on a spur of the Silk Road, and in the 19th century there was a Buddhist monastery here, home to 3000 lamas. The monastery was destroyed in the purges, but at a natural amphitheatre you'll still see Tibetan script carved into the rock. It reads: Om Mani Padme Om (for the sake of all sentient beings).
