Welcome to Montpelier
If you head south from the north coast along the B8, passing through Anchovy, you drop south into a broad valley. Citrus fields splotch across the valley, but in the 19th century this was a sugar estate that was at the epicenter of the great slave rebellions that rocked the Western parishes. The great house of the old Montpelier sugar plantation burned down (unrelated to slave rebellion issues) a few years back, but St Mary’s Anglican Church still stands near the ruins. Nearby, you can do some of Jamaica's most challenging whitewater rafting on the Great River at Caliche Rainforest Park & Adventure Tour, or else partake in a gentle, family-friendly float down the river.
