Some 20km south of Stresa, Arona is a lively lakeside town whose lanes are lined with shops and eateries, and its picturesque piazzas draw a wide cross section of Maggiorean society in the evenings. Arona was the birthplace of the son of the Count of Arona and Margherita de’ Medici, who would go on to be canonised San Carlo Borromeo (1538–84). Arona's biggest attraction is a massive statue of San Carlo that looms on a hilltop north of town.
