    Restaurant Îles des Joies

Our favourite restaurant in downtown Conakry, this very simple, family-run place is hidden down a dirty side-alley and, at first, looks rather uninviting, but don't fret. The seafood served up here – which is cooked so that it's slightly crunchy on the outside and lush and soft on the inside – is as fresh and delicious as can be.

You can buy Ivorian attiéké (grated cassava) on many a Conakry street corner, but this thatch-roof eatery prepares it fresh and does it better than most. Occasional live bands at weekends.

    Le Damier

Le Damier started over a quarter of a century ago as a simple, French-style patisserie and today still sells by far the most authentically French breads, tarts and croissants in Guinea. Les Jardins de Guinée

The city's best-known French restaurant is very popular with expats and has a lovely calming garden setting and plenty of space, but the food is only so-so. As well as a French-influenced menu, it also serves pretty decent pizzas and a variety of fish dishes.

    La Pizzeria

It doesn't need to bother with a fancy name – the local grapevine has this relaxed and humble house down as the nation's best pizza oven. Pizzas are large with thin dough and imaginative toppings all cooked in a proper wood-fired pizza oven.

    Avenue

Classy, expat-popular, American-style diner serving oversized burgers stuffed with cheddar cheese, pickles and salads. It also does fish 'n' chips and pizzas. It's currently one of the 'in' places to eat in Conakry.

    Le Gentilhommière Plus

Le Gentilhommière Plus doesn't look all that much from the outside, but the bamboo, thatch and calabash interior invites you to stick around a while, as does the wide variety of African dishes.

Two dozen different flavours of homemade ice creams fill the freezers of this bubbly pink cafe that attracts well-to-do locals and expats.

Tucking into fresh barbecued fish or spice infused local dishes here, where diners eat out under bendy coconut trees overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it can be easy to let the noise and pollution of Conakry fade from your mind as you're transported to a tropical beach scene.

    Belvédère

The large garden is a favourite for family parties and live concerts. The menu is made of fast-food staples, but the garden space is pleasant and as good for an evening beer as a meal.
