Hora (itself also known as Kythira), the island's small capital, consists of a Cycladic-style cluster of white-and-blue cubes, stretching south along a slender ridge towards a 14th-century Venetian kastro perched on a separate craggy hilltop. Most of the action is based around the open square at its northern end, while tasteful little shops line the way to the kastro, ranging from fine antiques to bespoke jewellery.
