The world’s busiest airport is once again Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The Airports Council International has released its annual world airport traffic report, finding that in 2018, the Georgia airport once again had the most travellers passing through.

The top three airports in the world for passenger traffic were once again Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, and Dubai International Airport. The fourth and fifth place airports, Los Angeles International Airport and Tokyo International Airport, have swapped places since last year.

More than 107 million passengers pass through the Atlanta airport each year, a 3.3% increase from last year. However, Beijing may be gaining on Atlanta, with nearly 101 million passengers, a 5.4% increase.

While the world’s largest hubs are continuing to grow, smaller airports around the world are gaining in passengers. Much of the growth is occurring in Asia, with 12 of the fastest-growing top 30 airports in 2018 are located in either China or India.

“India’s move towards a more liberalized aviation market and the nation’s strengthening economic fundamentals have helped it become one of the fastest-growing markets with its traffic growing rapidly in a relatively short time,” said ACI world director-general Angela Gittens in a statement.
