    Gjoça Restaurant

Authentic Albanian home cooking is served at this tiny place on the main street of the Old Town. Everything is cooked at the counter on a small gas stove by an elderly lady who puts a lifetime of cooking know-how into every dish. There are only three interior tables plus one or two outside, so get there early to ensure a seat.

    Odaja Restaurant

Cooking up a storm since 1937, Odaja is a small and cute 1st-floor restaurant serving good, honest home-cooked Albanian mountain dishes. Tuck into the oh-so-succulent meatballs with cheese, devour some stuffed peppers and relish the superb moussaka, and you'll quickly come to understand just how good Albanian food can be.

    Mapo

Despite existing for over a century, this friendly family-run restaurant just above the Old Town's main square has a surprisingly modern selection of international dishes and is a good breakfast choice, serving up smoothies, waffles and excellent coffee. There's a range of traditional Albanian dishes on offer as well, and the tables outside are gorgeous on a sunny morning.

    Kujtimi

This laid-back outdoor restaurant, run by the Dumi family, is an excellent choice. Try the delicious trofte (fried trout; 400 lekë), the midhje (fried mussels; 350 lekë) and qifqi (rice balls fried in herbs and egg, a local speciality). The terrace is the perfect place to absorb the charms of the Old Town with a (rough!) glass of local wine.

    Taverna Kuka

Just beyond Gjirokastra's old mosque, this largely outdoor terrace restaurant has a wonderful location and a menu full of delicious Albanian cooking, including qofta (rissoles), Saranda mussels, pancetta and grilled lamb. There's a surprisingly cool decor given the rural Albanian setting, and its terrace is a firm local favourite on summer evenings.
