Welcome to Kızkalesi
The coastal village of Kızkalesi boasts a lovely swathe of beach bookended by two perfect castles: one on the mainland, the other perching photogenically on an island just offshore. Unfortunately the town itself is a grid of rather grim-looking concrete-slab apartment blocks that look like they were slapped up in five minutes. Kızkalesi really springs into action from June to September when locals make a beeline for the beach on steaming-hot weekends. For archaeology and history buffs, though, the village is a popular base as a springboard for the virtual open-air museum of ruins scattered across the Olba Plateau.
