Pretty Valencia de Alcántara is 7km east of the Portuguese border; its position in the borderlands has bequeathed it a binational and somewhat turbulent past – it was even captured by Portugal from 1644 to 1668. Its well-preserved old centre is a curious labyrinth of whitewashed houses, churches and mansions and there's a real sense of having fallen off the map out here.
