    Restaurant Clivia

More contemporary than most and superb in every respect, Clivia gathers around an inner courtyard, where a mosaic of pine panels and bell-shaped lights create an abstract artwork. The food (especially the fish) is prepared with panache. Prawn carpaccio with sweet red pepper is a delicious lead to the house speciality: wild sea bass steamed in malvasia wine.

    Il Giardino

For many, this is the pick of the restaurants on Plaça Major, with a fine terrace and friendly service. The menu whispers longingly of bella Italia, with mains like lasagne with salmon, fresh goat cheese and zucchini hitting the sweet spot. Its adjacent patisserie and chocolate shop is a delectable post-dinner detour or breakfast choice. Children are well provided for.

    Cantonet

As day slides into dusk, this restaurant terrace in front of the Esglésias de Monti-Sion is an entrancing choice, with views reaching across the old town rooftops to the Puig de Maria beyond. Settle down to mussels in oregano sauce, gilthead bream in a Sardinian wine sauce or lamb cutlets grilled with honey and thyme. They do a mean tiramisu, too.

    La Font del Gall

You'll be lucky to bag a spot on the pavement terrace here in summer. The chef keeps it simple, with spot-on Mallorcan dishes like crisp, slow-roasted suckling pig with grilled vegetables and jacket potato and seafood paella. There's a range of vegetarian starters and mains, too. Our only gripe is that portions can be modest.

    La Placeta

Everyone raves about La Placeta at Hotel Sant Jordi, whether for its pretty alfresco setting on the square, child-friendly waiters or no-nonsense home cooking. Dishes as simple as prawns sautéed with artichokes and lamb roasted in its own juices, and Madeira wine, reveal true depth of flavour.
