Oom Japie se Huis

Free State

This wonderful and expansive bookstore lives in a Victorian home dating to 1881, which a previous owner lovingly restored. (In the 90s, the place received an award for 'best restored vernacular house' in South Africa). Titles come in a variety of languages, English and Afrikaans included, and cover a wide variety of subjects.

On occasion, the store doubles as a mini-restaurant, and a chef can be hired to prepare things like mutton knuckles and baked Karoo lamb, while owner Richard Proctor-Sims hosts and regales guests with stories. A private, well-stocked bar behind the shop includes top South African wines and imported spirits. Call ahead to book.
