    Daw Yee

Humble Daw Yee does some of the best Burmese food you'll find anywhere. It has a great selection of curries, including an insanely fatty prawn curry, all on display. Be sure to order one of the vegetable side dishes (K500) that change daily. It's off the southern end of Strand Rd. Look for the English sign.

    Bone Gyi

There's a big menu here, mostly featuring Chinese-inspired dishes but also including a few Thai ones and even some spicy Rakhine State–style soups. It's especially good for fish, grilled or steamed. There's an outside area, and efficient service, too. It's foreigner friendly, so it's a little pricier than other restaurants of its type.

    Bangkok Restaurant

The advertising tagline for this new riverside place is 'Beyond the boundaries of taste'. We're not so sure about that, but there is a big selection of Thai classics – curries and salads – and many seafood options, as well as a pleasant and plant-festooned terrace to eat on. It also does pizza and cocktails.

    Mi Cho Restaurant

This busy place serves excellent Muslim-style Burmese cuisine; in particular, a rich biryani and a delicious dhal soup. Look for the small yellow English-language sign and get here early: the biryani goes quickly.

    Grandfather & Grandmother Restaurant

The money raised at this teashop and simple restaurant goes to a charity helping the town’s elderly. No alcohol is served, but it does have decent fruit shakes, reasonable Chinese-Burmese dishes and a breezy riverside location. Look for the silhouettes of old people walking with canes painted on its wall.

    Mya Thanlwin Restaurant

Standard Burmese-influenced Chinese dishes are available here. It's as much a place to drink as it is to eat, and the riverside setting and draught beer draw in the locals each night.

    May South India Food

The tasty and substantial vegetarian thali platter is the reason to come to this hole-in-the-wall restaurant, although it does serve chicken dishes as well.
