Welcome to North of Mullingar
The area north of Mullingar is famed for its lakes. The best-known is Lough Derravaragh, an 8km-long lake associated with the legend of the children of Lír, who were turned into swans here by their jealous stepmother. Each winter the legend is recalled by thousands of snow-white migratory swans that flock here from as far away as Russia and Siberia.
Along with the lakes and rolling landscapes you'll find plenty of historical interest around the unassuming town of Castlepollard and bucolic Fore Valley.
