Normally visited for its ancient adobe fortress, Rayen is a charming small town in its own right, with blue-domed religious buildings, clumps of old mud houses and treelined streets sloping gently towards the snowy ridge of Mt Hezar (4420m). With a decent guesthouse and a scattering of places to eat and drink, Rayen has just enough facilities to make it a viable cool-air escape from larger Kerman.
