Many villages are nestled in the lush tropical forests of Koro, northwest of Ovalau. Roads over the mountainous interior provide plenty of thrills and wonderful views. A portion of the island is freehold, so plenty of foreigners have bought up land to build their second homes – the community has its own website (www.koroisland.org).
At Dere Bay a wharf allows you to walk out to good swimming and snorkelling; inland there's a waterfall and natural pool. The co-run resorts are surrounded by residential developments and have been aimed at people visiting or building real estate on the island, although they are gearing up to be more tourist friendly.
Koro was badly affected by Cyclone Winston in 2016.
